T.O.P. Self: Thinking on Purpose
A skill based approach to self-regulation and mindfulness
Why: We have entered an era where anger, sadness, anxiety and attentional issues are being medicated as young as age 5. The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that 51% of individuals used one or more prescription drugs in 1999 and 59% doing so by 2002. That’s well over half of the population! However, one of the most startling increases was in the use of antidepressants, with use steadily growing at every two-year measuring period. From 1999 to 2012 the percentage of Americans on antidepressants increased from 6.8% to 13%. And that is just for depression! NAPL recognizes that a skill based approach to mindfulness, coupled with daily, play-based movement and a healthy diet can drastically and immediately turn around this potentially catastrophic trend.
